Adding an "*Any* of the following are true" or "*All* of the following are true" sub-rule in creating a Matchlist?

Hi Hendrik

I was wondering, in beaTunes, is it possible to add an "Any of the
following are true" or "All of the following are true" sub-rule in
creating a Matchlist?

It is possible in iTunes, but I can't figure it out for beaTunes:
[image: Screenshot 2021-11-12 at 11.29.45.jpg] [image: Screenshot 2021-11-12 at 11.31.42.jpg] The reason I'm asking is that I would like to be able to make a ruleset
that includes more than one key
as a filter while choosing "Similar color
only".

Based on the Open Key Notation
https://www.beatunes.com/en/open-key-notation.html explained on the
beaTunes website, I think it would be an amazing option if you could choose
"Harmonic key" as a filter and it would pick songs with keys harmonic to the seed song(s), based on the Open Key Notation system.

Then I could select "Similar color only" as the ruleset and "Harmonic key"
as a filter, resulting in a list of songs that have similar colors to the
seed song as well as keys harmonic to the key song.

Right now, I cannot pick more than one key as a filter, because all the
filters fall under the "All of the following rules are true" option.
Choosing two keys therefore yields zero results. Adding a sub-filter "Any
of the following rules are true" would fix the problem, because then I
could say: make a rule set that has "Max Richter" as artist ("All") + that
has "Any" of these keys.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

If there's a simple solution to this that I've not encountered, please
enlighten me. Otherwise, thanks for bearing with me and taking this
feedback into account.

Sincerely
Alexander

    Hi Alexander,

I understand the request, but can only offer you a workaround:

    • create a playlist with your first filter criterion (artist = Max Richter)
    • then create a matchlist with ANY and whatever keys you want and that first playlist as source

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Hendrik

Thanks for getting back to me. That workaround will work indeed.

I found yet another workaround, maybe:

I added a custom ruleset that has only "Similar Color" and "Matching Key",
    both set to 5.
This allows me to choose a seed song and have both rules (color and key)
    applied to the song.
Could you elaborate on this method? Should I add "Similar timbre" to that
    as well?

Do you think in the near future there will be an option to add sub-rules to
the ruleset, so we can alternate between "All"-rules and "Any"-rules within
    a single Matchlist?

    Thank you.

    Hey Alexander,

yes, using a "Matching Key" rule implements a bunch of harmonic mixing rules. It essentially does what you have in mind. Adding "Color" will also favor tracks that sound similar to the seed track, i.e. have a simile instrumentation and rhythm structure. Do not add "Timbre", if you already have "Color", it won't make things better. "Timbre" is basically "Color" without the rhythmic/tempo information.

Do you think in the near future there will be an option to add sub-rules to the ruleset, so we can alternate between "All"-rules and "Any"-rules within
    a single Matchlist?

No, I'm sorry, but there are quite a few other things on my way too long todo lists that come first.

    Have a great weekend!

Hey Alexander - how far have you taken these matchlists for Harmonic Mixing?

    Hi there

I use it all the time.

So now I use a custom made ruleset that looks like this:
I use a favorite song as a seed and then I let beaTunes use above ruleset +
    I add a Genre-filter and/or a Year-filter. This yields quite amazing
playlists in which I (re)discover songs in my iTunes that really match with
    the seed song.

As I mentioned to Hendrik before, it would be even better if we were able
to add sub-filters, so we can mix ALL-rules with ANY-rules. I'm sure that's
complicated, but not impossible. iTunes does it.

It would be completely mind blowing if beaTunes offered a filter called
"Harmonic Key" that would select only songs with an *identical or
compatible Key* to the seed song(s). Now my custom ruleset does this for
me. But a filter that is based on the *Open Key Notation* system might work
    better? It's just a suggestion.

If you have any suggestions for me, to further explore or improve upon my
usage of beaTunes, then please let me know.

    Sincerely
    Alexander
