Beatunes often loses interest in the keyboard, no keyboard focus

Hello,

So far I am quite happy with Beatunes, except for one annoyance. I am experiencing a weird problem, every few minutes while working with Beatunes, on MacOS. The program sort of becomes unresponsive, but in a strange way:

  • Selecting songs still works, switching between the main library and playlists still works, the right mouse button still shows the popup menu. The program clearly is not frozen.
  • The Find field will not accept keyboard focus. I cannot type in the search field. Keyboard shortcuts (e.g. ⌘R to show the song file) will flash the menu in the menu bar, but take no action. Same with the Show Song FIle option in the popup menu: I can click it, but it will not open the Finder.
  • The Get Info item (⌘I) is greyed out.
  • Everything in the main window is greyed out, instead of using the blue highlights on selected or active items.
  • Activity Monitor shows nearly zero CPU usage, and very little memory pressure.

All in all, it appears as if Beatunes is working fine, except that it forgot about the existence of my keyboard.
And then, after a few seconds or even a few minutes, Beatunes starts acting normal again.

I am using Beatunes with iTunes, on a Mac Mini (mid 2011) running MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra. The Mini has 8 GB of RAM, and a Fusion drive (a 250 GB SSD coupled with a 750 GB hard disk).
Synchronise on window activation is switched off; I often switch between Beatunes / Finder / browser.
I have run Repair database, to no visible effect.
I have not found any pattern to what triggers these "keyboard holidays".

Any ideas?

    Hey Eelco,

no... frankly I have no idea what's going on. Once this happens again, could you please upload a fresh set of logs via beaTunes' Help menu? Perhaps that sheds some light in this weird behavior.

    Thanks and happy holidays,

    Hendrik,

I added new tracks to my library. They were read-only, so I set the
permissions. Then around 9:46 the weird keyboard behaviour started
again. I have noticed in the past that Synchronizing helps to get things
unstuck. At 9:49 I tried to synchronize. BeaTunes asked me whether I
wanted to force a sync; I replied No. Then beaTunes started working again.
I closed beaTunes without uploading the logs (sorry), so started it
again and chose Upload Logs again. Hope this will help.

I have a kind-of workaround by hitting Synchronize every time the UI
appears to be unresponsive, but this is far from ideal.
    Some further data:
    MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra
    beaTunes 5.2.20 with 8268 songs

    Thanks for your help,

    Hey Eelco,

can you please try to turn off the Location column? Here's how:

    • Select a track in the main table
    • Open the View menu
    • Select View Options...
    • Drag Location from the right list to the left.

(alternatively, you can also just right-click on the main song table header, open the sub-menu File and then disable Location)

The problem seems to be caused by tracks with files that are either non-existent or currently not available on some external medium. In this case, beaTunes asks iTunes/Music and that call may be slow and leads to hangups. Not showing the location works around the issue.

    Hope this helps,

    -hendrik

    Hendrik,

Thanks, that seems to have worked. But that means that there are still
files that somehow cause trouble. The Inspect function does not show any
missing files. Is this something that I can correct?

    Regards,

It's possible that beaTunes was able to retrieve a "new" location for files by asking iTunes. BTW: that's exactly the process that causes the lag. I'm working on improving this.
