New Matchlist: Creating Matchlist fails

Hi

I just had beaTunes analyse my entire music library en now I updated to version 5.2.19. When I want to make a Match List based on a single song, the "Creating Matchlist" window appears but then it just disappears and nothing happens. No list is created, no alert is shown.

I already put the Match quality to 0% but this doesn't seem to have any influence, which is really weird.

I did a test with "Let It Be" from The Beatles, see attached screenshots. I made my own simple ruleset called "Harmonic key" that has just one rule: Matching key = 1.0

So I select the song, I go to New Matchlist, select the ruleset and specify nothing else, click OK, the window appears that says "Finding matching songs for Let It Be" and then it disappears and nothing happened.

This is very frustrating.

Please help.
Also attached: the specs on my Mac and the beaTunes app.

Thank you
Alexander

    Hi Alexander,

please reproduce the issue and upload your logs via Help -> Upload Logs from with in the app. Hopefully that will give some insights into what's going on.

    Thank you!

    Hi Hendrik

I sent you the Logs after reproducing the issue.

So what I did this time:

I made my own ruleset, called "beaTunes magic":
Next, I select "New Matchlist" based on "Let It Be" by The Beatles and
    using my ruleset:
Leaving that SYNC option off ("matching keys"), this yields a (*fantastic!*)
    playlist:
    [image: Screenshot 2021-01-23 at 16.21.55.jpg][image: Screenshot 2021-01-23
    at 16.21.58.jpg]
But when I leave that *SYNC option on*, I only get the "Creating Matchlist"
window for a few seconds and then it disappears, without creating a
    playlist.
It disappears and then nothing happens.

Should I not use this SYNC option? What is it for? How should I use it?

    Thanks for your help.

    Sincerely
    Alexander

    Hey Alexander,

when turning SYNC on, you essentially ask beaTunes to match tracks that would be in a suitable key, if they were played with the tempo of the seed track without pitch correction. This is useful, when you slow down or speed up a mechnical turntable: the tempo changes, and so does the pitch. SYNC allows people who don't like (the sound of) pitch correction to still find matching tracks (w.r.t. key). If this sounds all odd and weird to you, the recommendation is to leave SYNC off. More info about it can be found at https://blog.beatunes.com/2018/04/show-key-as-if-harmonic-mixing-wi...

That said, I believe you ran into a bug. It should be fixed in the latest dev snapshot available from https://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-5-2-20-SNAPSHOT.dmg

Thanks for making me aware of this,

    Hi Hendrik

Thank you, I've installed the snapshot.

I have some more questions about certain rules I can match songs by:

       - What is the difference between BPM and MPM and how does it influence
       the matching?
       - What is *Timbre*?
       - What is *Time** Signatures*?
       - What is *Tuning*?
       - Under *Amazon Similarity*, I can (un)check a box to "Ignore Amazon
rule during initial matching": what's the difference in results with
       checking or unchecking this box?

    Thanks for explaining to me.

    Sincerely
    Alexander

    Hi Alexander,

Thank you, I've installed the snapshot.

    Did it solve the issue?

What is the difference between BPM and MPM and how does it influence the matching?

MPM uses Measures per Minutes, not Beats. This is interesting for ballroom dancing. Imagine a Waltz in 3/4 time and a March in 2/4 time having the same BPM, then their MPM are different.

    • What is Timbre?

It's a mapping of timbral properties into color space. Contrary to color is does not contain information about tempo or rhythm.

    • What is Time* Signatures*?

    See Wikipedia.

    • What is Tuning?

Usually, the middle A (A4) is at 440Hz. However, instruments can also be tuned to 444Hz or other frequencies. Tuning in beaTunes usually means deviation from 440Hz and it is measured in cents. See also here.

Under Amazon Similarity, I can (un)check a box to "Ignore Amazon rule during initial matching": what's the difference in results with checking or unchecking this box?

beaTunes offers a panel called Matching Songs (lower right corner of the main window). There is displays songs matching the currently selected track using the current ruleset. By checking that box, beaTunes will first ignore the Amazon rule and display results using locally available data right away. Then, in a second matching run, it will query Amazon for information (which can take a while) and use that information to update the matchings songs pane. Personally, I'd recommend not using the Amazon rule.

    Hope this helps,

    -hendrik

    Thank you Hendrik

This was very helpful. And yes, now with the SYNC option turned on,
beaTunes does now in fact produce a Matchlist. But as you explained, I will
leave the SYNC option off. I'm not a DJ.

Sorry to bother you once more, but during the initial analysis of my iTunes
library, beaTunes ran into some song files that couldn't be analysed. This
produced a list of errors. See attached screenshot. What could I do to fix
    those files?

    Cheers

    That depends on the problem.

Apparently you have some missing files there. For some issue you could right-click on the problem and options will appear. You might want to check whether the file is really missing in iTunes. You could also run the Missing File inspection to better deal with these issues.

For the UnsupportedAudioFile issues, you might want to check whether the files are DRM-protected and therefore encrypted (encrypted files cannot be analyzed).

    Hi Hendrik

Thanks again. I'll follow up on your advice.

I noticed, every time beaTunes syncs with my iTunes library, it creates *three
empty playlists, all called "Downloaded"*. I delete them every time, since
they also appear then in iTunes, but what is the reason for this and how
can I tell beaTunes not to create these playlists after each sync?

I am aware that I can turn off syncing upon window activation
in preferences, but this is sometimes handy.

    Thanks
    Alexander

Synchronization with iTunes means that beaTunes attempts to mirror what it finds in iTunes. It does manipulate iTunes at all. However, when you delete the playlists in beaTunes that change is propagated to iTunes, i.e. you also deleted them in iTunes. I guess, since these are "automatic" playlists, iTunes simply re-creates them. So, for the moment, I think there is nothing we can do about it.

The one in the preferences is for the Matching Songs panel, the one in the Matchlist dialog is for that individual Matchlist.

So they are independent from each other.

    Hi Hendrik

    Thank you.

I was also wondering: in the Matchlist window, I can add more Rules on top
of the seed song. Above, I can choose a source playlist and below, rules
like Year, Genre, Rating ... *but not Playlist*.

    Why?

I have smart playlists in my iTunes that combine certain bands because they
have artists in common, or playlists that combine certain subgenres and
leave others out ... It would be cool to also be able to tell beaTunes to
make Matchlist based on a seed song + taking those extra playlists into
    account.

Would that feature be added in the near future, you think?

    Thanks
    Alexander

At the top of the dialog you can choose which playlist to pull things from... Is that not what you want?

    Why?

Easy. The filters are all on the property level. I.e. properties of songs. A playlist is not really a property of a song.

    Hi Hendrik

Thanks for your reply. I understand.

Sometimes it’s just also interesting to be able to cross-select more than
    one (smart) playlist.

But beaTunes gives all the options indeed - as you explained: on the
property level - once you’ve selected a source playlist.

    Thanks
    Alexander

This comment was split into a new discussion: Adding an "*Any* of the following are true" or "*All* of the following are true" sub-rule in creating a Matchlist?

    Hi Hendrik

I was wondering, in beaTunes, is it possible to add an "*Any* of the
following are true" or "*All* of the following are true" sub-rule in
    creating a Matchlist?

It is possible in iTunes, but I can't figure it out for beaTunes:
The reason I'm asking is that *I would like to be able to make a ruleset
that includes more than one key* as a filter while choosing "Similar color
    only".

Based on the Open Key Notation
    <https://www.beatunes.com/en/open-key-notation.html> explained on the
beaTunes website, I think it would be an amazing option if you could choose
"Harmonic key" as a filter and it would pick songs with keys harmonic to
the seed song(s), based on the Open Key Notation system.

Then I could select "Similar color only" as the ruleset and "Harmonic key"
as a filter, resulting in a list of songs that have similar colors to the
seed song as well as keys harmonic to the key song.

Right now, *I cannot pick more than one key as a filter*, because all the
filters fall under the "All of the following rules are true" option.
Choosing two keys therefore yields zero results. Adding a sub-filter "Any
of the following rules are true" would fix the problem, because then I
could say: make a rule set that has "Max Richter" as artist ("All") + that
    has "Any" of these keys.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

If there's a simple solution to this that I've not encountered, please
enlighten me. Otherwise, thanks for bearing with me and taking this
    feedback into account.

    Sincerely
    Alexander
