1. If you experienced a crash or other abnormal behavior, please attach the log file 'beaTunes-logs-2020-12-31-142029.zip' by dragging it from your desktop onto the 'Attach File' button below.

2. Please enter your message to us here.
Every time I Inspect my database beaTunes finds the same problems. I fix some, commit the solutions and close the program. When I reopen the program and Inspect, the same problems are still there.

I just followed the instructions to check which type of library I have. There is a drop-down box with only one choice available: "Music.app: Current Library". How can I be sure beaTunes is looking at the right library?

    Hey Mike,

    sorry for the late reply.

Committing inspection fixes in beaTunes is a two-step process. Did you commit all pending solutions? Please see also https://blog.beatunes.com/2015/02/improving-tags-through-inspection... for a detailed explanation.

    Thank you,

Hi Hendrik, I finally had a chance to double check this issue. I have one Sorting Issue which I fixed by selecting “Enter another sort album artist for the selected songs.” I then went to Tools -> Commit All Solutions. I then did another Inspection and the problem is still there. I didn’t see any other steps in the documentation. What am I missing?

    Hi Mike,

can you please run the inspection again and commit the solutions and afterwards upload your logs? You can do so from within the app via Help -> Upload Logs.

Please also describe what solution for which song you asked beaTunes to apply/commit, so that I can identify it in the logs.

    Thank you!

Hi Hendrik, I’ve just uploaded the logs. The song is Lone Star Queen by the New York Dolls but the sort album is Elvis Presley. But I tried playing the song and none of that is correct. It’s a completely different song by a completely different artist. I imagine I should synchronize again?

    Hey Mike,

the logs say the the change was communicated to Music.app:

2021-01-05 11:08:54,025 [50091045] [INFO ][CommitCallableSolutionWorker-0] com.tagtraum.beatunes.inspection.SortNameInspector: Committing: Changing sortAlbumArtist to New York Dolls

return tracks of item 1 of library playlists of (first source where kind is library) where persistent ID is "32707B94A23BC724"
    end tell

set sort album artist of «class cFlT» id 45212 of «class cLiP» id 64 of «class cSrc» id 63 to ("New York Dolls")
    end tell

So yes, perhaps synchronizing again is good idea. Perhaps also Tools -> Repair Database to make sure everything is really in order.

    Hendrik,

I’ve tried repairing and rebuilding the database. I’ve just tried removing 4 songs whose files are missing. After applying the solutions and Inspecting again, all the problems are back. At this point BeaTunes is not worth using. I don’t know what to try next.

    Hey Mike,

I'm sorry this isn't working the way it should be.

I’ve just tried removing 4 songs whose files are missing.

I believe, that when you tried committing those 4 solutions (i.e. deleting from Music), beaTunes was still working on committing other solutions and ignored your request.

I'm not entirely sure how that can happen. Did you see any error messages?

Are you using the two-step process for apply/commit or do you commit solutions directly (setting in inspection preferences)?

When you freshly start beaTunes and just run the missing file inspection and commit the 4 solutions, does it work?

    Thanks,

    -hendrik

PS: It looks like you are using afpfs as a network protocol. Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason for this choice? It seems that Apple is slowly phasing out support for it. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol

    Hendrik,

Everything seems to be working okay. Thanks for your help. I had that one song which was in the wrong album. I tried manually moving it, deleting it from the folder and importing it from the correct folder. iTunes put it right back in the wrong place. Maybe because the album name is the same for both artists in this case. Anyway, it wasn’t an important song to me so I deleted it. Everything else seems to be working as I test through. I must’ve just picked an anomaly to use for the first test.

As for the afpfs, I don’t know why that is. I’ll look into whether I can change it without reformatting. Thanks for pointing it out.

No, I do think you stumbled over something and I would like to investigate this further. Could you please let me know, whether "Delay committing changes" in the Inspection preferences is on or off?

    Thanks,

    Hi Hendrik,

“Delay committing changes” is ON. I have never unchecked that box so it has been ON throughout this process. Two other bits that may be factors. My music library is on a NAS. Also, I run a program called Clean My Mac. It was occasionally telling me I had low RAM+Swap when this was all happening. After I manually deleted the file that started this whole thing, I restarted my computer (I had some big programs open originally). Hope some of this helps. Let me know if I can help further.

Further info, just uploaded logs. I had 128 pending solutions. I selected Tools -> Commit all solutions. Came back about ten minutes later and they’re still there but no option to Commit. Screenshot:

I just got back to the computer and found this. So obviously it was still churning away when I looked at it previously. Everything else cleared okay. I’m re-running inspect now.

    Hi Mike,

I am seeing a bunch of these messages in the logs:

Cannot make changes to file /Volumes/MJTunes/MusicLibrary/Media.localized/Cheikh Lô/Bambay Gueej/03 N'Jarinu Garab.m4a because it is being used by another application

Was the file indeed used by another application, e.g. played by Music.app or some other player? I.e., was it locked?

No, none of these files would have been in use while I was using beaTunes. But why does beaTunes need to make changes to a song file? Isn’t it true that all the library data is stored in the library file?

    Hey Mike,

it appears you have chosen to "Embed Artwork" into your audio files. So the answer is a clear no—not all changes you can do with beaTunes are just in some library file.

In fact, the majority of changes are communicated to Music.app, which in turn stores them in your audio files. That said, embedding artwork is something that's done by beaTunes itself.

    Cheers,

    -hendrik

Thanks Hendrik, I appreciate the clarification. More and more I feel that Music is to blame. I tried to buy an album yesterday and got an error from Music about not being able to save the library due to a duplicate file name. I don’t know if that refers to a library file or a song file. In any case, my current plan is to create a new library and to populate it with the music I currently listen to. Then I can use beaTunes to populate the BPM field which is all I really wanted to do in the first place.

    Hey Mike,

I am not sure what's going on here. But if Music.app does not work properly, beaTunes won't work properly, either. Perhaps creating a new library is the best way to go.

As mentioned earlier, I would also switch to SMB as file sharing protocol, if possible.

    Kind regards,

    -hendrik
