Shrinking playlists

Hi Hendrik, what would you make of this one? I sort my main music playlist by colour, highlight 200 songs to create a new playlist from the selection, then call the new playlist Red (or Orange, or Green, depending which colour songs I picked). The new playlist is duly created with 200 songs, but when I go to iTunes, the playlist is there, but with--say--75 songs. If I sync, the beaTunes playlist ends up with 75 songs too. I created 8 playlists like this last night, and 6 of these showed the problem. The other 2 correctly kept 200 songs. Weird?

    Hi Martie,

without seeing the logs, I can't tell you what exactly is going wrong.. I believe there was a case at some point where there was something wrong with one of the files and then for some reason beaTunes failed to add the following songs.

When you encounter this issue again - can you please shut down beaTunes right afterwards and send me your logs?

    Thanks,

    -hendrik

The last playlist I tried is called Dark Blue. It is supposed to have 200 songs, but ended up with 175 in iTunes. That's pretty good, actually. The previous one (Aqua) had 119 out of 201, and some of the others 70-something out of 200.

    Hi,

the log does not indicate any failure. There may be more messages in the other logs though. Generally, it is much more useful to me to look at all the files in the logs directory. They all compress (via zip) really well and it gives me the full picture.

Anyhow. What's entirely possible, is that beaTunes shows the playlist in beaTunes and is exporting the list to iTunes in the background. It may simply take a little while for the propagation to finish. Also - when iTunes dialogs are open, the whole thing does not work.

Could you please try again, give it a little while, shut down beaTunes and zip the whole log folder before you send it? Maybe that gives me some clues!

    Thank you!

Still can't make it work :-(

The last playlist was Lemon Yellow: 200 items ending up as 20.

Leaving it for a while does not seem to work; definitely no dialogs open.

    Hi Martie,

it looks like I will release a minor update tomorrow, which will contain some slight code changes, which might be relevant in this context (new playlist on Windows). In case they are not solving the issue, they should at least write some additional info to the log, that hopefully helps figuring out what's going wrong.

Please let me know, if 2.1.3 really does solve the issue and if not, I would really appreciate it, if you sent me another fresh set of logs, after you tried 2.1.3.

PS: In case you are interested in the technical detail - on Windows mass adding of songs to a playlist is done in a vbscript file, which is generated and executed on the fly. I assume that in your case one of the adds fails (for whatever reason) and the following adds are then skipped. This might be fixed in 2.1.3.

Still doesn't work :-( Playlist Bluebells, 200 songs, ended up with 10 in iTunes.
    I've attached the latest logs.

    Hi Martie,

    thanks for the logs.

I attached the temp VBScript file that should add those 200 tracks.
Assuming that playlist you created still exists in your iTunes library, can you please save the file somewhere and execute it?

Do you get any error message or does it simply add those 200 songs?

    Thanks!

    Martie!

I looked into this some more and think I really know what's going on...

iTunes seems to be very slow adding those tracks on your machine.
Any chance the actual tracks are on a slow external drive?

In any case - it's a timeout that leads to the abortion of the adding process - this can easily be fixed. I'll get back to you with something tomorrow.

The script worked perfectly. And yes, the tracks are on an external hard
drive. I also have a very large library, and I tend to have a gazillion
programs open at the same time .... :-)

    Hey Martie:

    that explains it...
I built a dev snapshot that should solve the problem for you.

    Please try:

    Thanks,
