"Synchronization was aborted. Failed to initialize native Music.app library ()"

Bought a new Mac, and used Migration Assistant to transfer everything over to the new machine. Catalina 10.15.7. Most things worked perfectly.

Lots of problems with BeaTunes. It couldn't sync--which to me looks like a permissions issue. Tried repairing, and eventually rebuilding the Beatunes database, and got the error message: Synchronization was aborted. Failed to initialize native Music.app library ().

Tried restarting. Tried uninstalling and re-installing Beatunes. Same error message.

What to try next?

    Hi Geoff,

    can you access the Help menu in the beaTunes app? If so, please open it and select Upload Logs.

    Thanks,

    Hi Geoff,

    please ignore my message about uploading logs. I have just noticed that you have already done that. Let me take a look...

    Hi Geoff,

    there are some conflicting messages in the logs:

    It seems you have a folder-based library (based on /Users/geoffb 1/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music), but the failure occurs when trying to access your Music.app library. So I am wondering, did you use beaTunes with iTunes (now Music.app) before or did you use it stand-alone, i.e. with a folder-based collection?

    That aside, can you please download and install the current dev snapshot from https://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-5-2-14-SNAPSHOT.dmg It should at least give us a better error message than what you see right now. After running and attempting to sync, please upload a fresh set of logs.

    Thank you,

    -hendrik

    Hi hendrik

    First of all, thank you for taking the time to investigate this. And thanks for this great product.

    I’ve been using Beatunes for a long, long time. It’s always been using the iTunes / Music app library, never with standalone files. I did just notice that the default for Music is to put the files in a different place than iTunes.

    I’m tempted to go to
    Music > Preferences > Files
    and “Reset” the Music media folder location to see if that resolves the problem.

    Just downloaded Beatunes 5.2.14, and it gives me a different error message.

    I just uploaded the logs to you.

    Here is the support info:
    * beaTunes: 5.2.14-SNAPSHOT
    * JVM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM
    * Version: 11.0.7+10-LTS
    * Vendor: BellSoft
    * OS: Mac OS X 10.15.7, x86_64
    * Library: Music.app
    * Memory: 92m - 1024m
    * Registered as: Geoff Bannoff

    Probably some weird permission thing that happened when I used Apple’s Migration Assistant to move everything from the old Macbook Pro to the new one.

    Hey Geoff,

    thanks for trying out the snapshot. The problem is still the same, but at least we now have an error message.

    Background: On macOS 10.15 and later, beaTunes uses the ITLibrary framework by Apple to access Music.app (no more XML file parsing). This usually works like a charm, but in your case initialization of the ITLibrary fails with the error message The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 7011.)

    Frankly, this error message is as cryptic to me as it is probably to you. Apparently something is not right in your ITLibrary setup, something that I or beaTunes have little influence on.

    Hoping that someone else might have a bright idea, I have posted the error message here. Feel free to spread the link to that page (https://stackoverflow.com/q/64239664/942774).

    Question: Does Music.app work without problems?

    Sorry to not have an immediate solution.

    Hi hendrik

    Thanks.

    The Music app works just fine.

    I just tried a few things, none of which worked.
    - resetting the Apple Music preferences Music Media folder location to the default. (/MacIntosh HD/Users/geoffb/Music/Music-Catalina/Media
    - restarting the computer (lots of times)
    - changing BeaTunes->Preferences->General-> Music Library to a file-based system
    - deleting the BeaTunes library in BeaTunes preferences, and also through Finder.
    - changing BeaTunes->Preferences->General-> Music Library back to Music.app: Current Library
    - changing the permissions on /Users/geoffb/Music/Music-Catalina to “Everyone-read/write"

    Same error message each time.

    So, let’s start from scratch. I’ll delete BeaTunes and every possible preference file it has and do a fresh install.

    Here is a list of every file and folder with “BeaTunes” in it. Hopefully this is all of them.

    I rely on BeaTunes to curate my 12,000 songs, and love it. And I’ve been a database programmer for 30+ years, so I like tinkering with things.

    I bet some preference file has a pointer to an old location on the machine that I migrated from. One my old machine, the file structure had the user “/user/geoffb 1”, whereas on the new machine, everything is in “/users/geoffB"

    Hi hendrik

    Well, that didn’t work. I erased every single BeaTunes file on my Mac, installed a fresh copy, got all the starting prompts, and immediately got the same error.

    I just uploaded the logs, in case that helps.

    To me this looks like it's something in the Apple provided framework itself, not in beaTunes. The call that fails is the very first to ITLibrary, it's plain vanilla and I have never seen this error before.

    Hi Hendrik

    Success! I had a different issue where my iPhone wasn’t connecting to Finder. The level 2 tech Apple tech support guy suggested that I open the TV app and the Music app. Opening both apps somehow fixed both problems.

    BeaTunes can now access the Music.app library!

    And, as a bonus, my iPhone can now access my Macbook.

    Problem solved, but in a very roundabout way.

    Thank you for your help and attention!
