error message cannot open connection

mac osx lion but the problem existed before updating to lion
cant find the mentioned path for log files under lion !

I believe the problem was caused by accidentally opening beatunes 2 after beatunes 3 was installed

I am using operating system OSX Lion 10.7, but had the same before updating from 10.6
    Beatunes 3.02 and Beatunes 2.1.20
the reason i was switching back to beatunes 2.1 is that 3.02 is very very slow on my system
i cannot attach all my log files, they are 32 MB zipped

    Hi Hans,

it looks like your internal beaTunes database is somehow dysfunctional. Can you please zip the folder /Users/hansmuhlbauer/Library/Application Support/beaTunes/Database/ and send it my way - perhaps something can still be saved.

    Hi Hans,

the dates on the database files indicate that you haven't been running beaTunes 3 for quite a while. Are you sure it's not working?

    -hendrik

BTW, downgrading back to beaTunes 2 after using beaTunes 3 can lead to dataloss in beaTunes 2 (not 3).

Just to make sure we are on the same page.

Which version would you like to use right now? beaTunes 2 or beaTunes 3?

    Thanks,

Also, but that's a different topic, please let me know, which part of beaTunes 3 was slow on your system... E.g. sync, startup, inspection, analysis, ... Thanks.

i like to use version 3 but currently its so slow on my machine that i had
to switch back to version2 version3 was simply too slow for me.
i had not tried version 3 on osx lion which i updated already.

anyway i want too switch to beatunes 3 and if i have to accept the slow
    speed i will.

hmm is quite some weeks back and i am not sure which part was causing the
    slow reaction.

lets just decide for version 3 right now and when i am back to operation i
report back to you where i feel its too slow for me.

    Ok,

let's try beaTunes 3 then. Please install the latest dev snapshot from http://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-3-0-3-SNAPSHOT-osx.dmg

It contains some code that speeds up startup for large iTunes collections a little bit.

When running this, do you still see the mentioned error message? If you do, could you please send me a fresh set of logs?

    Thank you,

    Hi Hans,

in your database folder, please move the files ending in .sql and .h2.db to another folder and try again. If that does not have the desired effect, please zip the .sql file and send it to me (i.e. attach to the web-based discussion).

The problem here seems to be, that the beaTunes 2 database does not appear to be in the best state anymore and therefore migration to the newer database format fails. But perhaps the information in the .sql file is still valid and can be restored.

    Thank you,

    -hendrik

    Hi Hans,

since your database is quite large let's try the following:

    • rename the Database folder to Database Backup
    • use Finder to create a new Database folder
    • copy the ...sql file from Database Backup to the new Database folder
    • open a shell window with Terminal.app (installed on every Mac - you can find it using spotlight or in the Utilities sub-folder of the Applications folder)
    • in said shell window, navigate to your new Database folder by executing the following command:

      cd /Users/hansmuhlbauer/Library/Application\ Support/beaTunes/Database/

    • then execute this command (one line) to execute the ....sql script that should contain the contents of your beaTunes 2 database:

      java -cp /Applications/beaTunes3.app/Contents/Resources/Java/h2-1.3.155.jar org.h2.tools.RunScript -script beaTunes-36AD696CC6C45CF5.sql -url jdbc:h2:beaTunes-36AD696CC6C45CF5

    • does the utility report any errors? if so, what does it report?

    • if you saw an error message (some sort of "exception" perhaps), delete all files in your Database folder, except the ...sql file.
    • now start beaTunes 3

    • if you did see any error messages, beaTunes will create a brand new database, importing what it can from your audio files.

    • If you didn't see any error messages, beaTunes will start with what was saved from beaTunes 2.

In either case, because of the size of your database, this will take a while. Have a cup of coffee, walk the dog, watch the news, whatever...
If you have embedded metadata into your files (setting in beaTunes general preferences), most if not all of your data will be recovered.

    Hope this helps,

    -hendrik

    1. my database folder is empty except the .sql file
    2. the command runs without any errors, see screenshot
    3. starting 3.03beta works and shows no errors at all
there is no music in my mediathek, only books and films, however all
playlists are present and there seems to be all files but not listing as
    music.
    4. after a sync with itunes library music appéars in the list

as of now all seams to be fine

    Hey,

Thanks for the feedback! Looks like things work out alright
It probably helped that you seem to know your way around with the shell :-)

As a general rule, removing the Database folder or it's contents will cause beaTunes to re-build the library from the files.

    Thanks,

    -hendrik

    thx for your help,

beatunes 3 looks slower on most things for me, especially cleanup from
    inspection.
for example in version 2 a single click was enough to select an option,
    now its click and accept
the whole process of cleanup is more cumbersome to me right now.

anyway i will not switch back to version 2 now and stay with rev 3 for all
    work.

    thx again, hans

Admittedly, you need to select an option and then still apply it.

But you can do it with the keyboard now. I.e. select an option using the tab key or typing in the solution number and then just hit Enter to apply it. Compared to having to select a solution with the mouse that should be a lot faster. That said, you can still select and apply with the mouse, by double-clicking a solution.
