playlists/matchlists empty in iTunes

I've been using beaTunes for a while, but never really pursued an issue I've always had with playlists/matchlists. I think it's cool that BT can get the BPM, "color" and key of songs. However, when I create a matchlist in beatunes and sync, nothing shows up in itunes.
Also, when I create a flat playlist in BT, the playlist itself shows up in iTunes, but it is empty.

Anyone else having this kind of problem?

    Hi,

can you reproduce the problem, shut down beaTunes and send me your logs? Perhaps I can see what's going wrong...
See http://help.beatunes.com/faqs/troubleshooting/where-are-the-beatune... for finding the logs.

    Thanks,

    Sorry, Clayton.

But zipx certainly falls in the category exotic and non-portable compression/archive formats. Can you please send me a regular zip file?

    Thanks,

Hi Hendrik - sorry. Zipx is just the current version of Winzip; attached is the older version...

    Hi Clayton,

thanks for the logs. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what I'm looking at, as there seems to be an analysis running in the background (so the logs is quite cluttered).

Can you please pause the analysis (or better clear the queue), wait a couple of seconds, repeat the steps you think lead to the failure and then shut down beaTunes, zip the logs and send them to me along with an exact description of what didn't work?

    Thank you!

Sorry for the delay... The holidays were very very busy.

Then problem I'm having, specifically, is when I create a matchlist in Beatunes (2.15). The list populates and I name it. Then I synchronise and the list disappears from Beatunes. The list appears in regular playlists in iTunes, but the list is empty.

    Thanks,
    Clayton

    Hi Clayton,

Sorry for the lat reply, but the forum service I use had some technical difficulties and I couldn't get to your log (http://hoth.entp.com/2011/1/7/postmortem-of-our-amazon-s3-outage).

Anyhow. What I see in the log is that you have some analysis running. Then you stop the analysis, beaTunes uses about 80s to do some internal homework, then nothing happens for a long time and then beaTunes syncs. But I don't see any attempt to create a playlist in between. What exactly did you do after the analysis stopped?

    Thanks,

    -hendrik

    Hendrick,

I've started completely over in an attempt to recreate the problem.

    Here's what I do:

    1. Create a matchlist in BT. I specified two seed songs and a total of 20. The program creates the list
    which I named @BT-Trial.
    2. I then toggle to iTunes where I see the playlist @BT-Trial, but it is empty.
    3. I toggle back to BT. The matchlist is there and includes 20 songs. Then after a few seconds,
the matchlist disappears as if it never existed.

    Thanks for the logs.
    Let's try the following:

    • start beaTunes
    • do not switch back and forth between beaTunes and iTunes
    • give it a second
    • manually sync (File menu)
    • let it finish the sync (status message at the bottom of the window)
    • now create some matchlist
    • give iTunes some time to dump a new iTunes Music Library.xml file
    • now finally take a look at what happened in iTunes and also beaTunes

Does the playlist now show up in both programs?

    Hi Hendrik...

I tried what you said below. Still didn't work. The playlist shows up in iTunes, but is empty. The matchlist appears in BT and is populated with song, then after a moment or so, is also empty. When I tried to synch manually, BT tells me that it is already in synch with iTunes.

    Hi Clayton,

beaTunes uses a little script to add the songs to the playlist in iTunes. It sounds like something is going wrong with this script in your case. An example for this kind of script is attached. You should be able to run it simply by double clicking it (in Windows Explorer). All it does, is creating a playlist called "TestList" and adding some songs (from your logs).

Can you please run this and let me know, whether it works and if not, how it does not work? Any error messages? Screenshots?

    Thank you,

    -hendrik

Ah! At least we found the culprit!
For some reason the iTunes automation server hasn't been installed properly.

Please open a Command Prompt window and go to the directory where iTunes is installed. If it is in c:\Program Files\iTunes type:

    cd "c:\Program Files\iTunes"
    iTunes.exe /regserver

Now try to execute that test.vbs file again. Any luck this time?

If not, please follow the advice in http://help.beatunes.com/kb/troubleshooting/failed-to-create-wsh-shell Did that help (i.e. can you create that test list with the file)?

If not, I'd try to install a fresh copy of iTunes from the Apple website and restart the computer, then try again.

Let's hope one of these steps will be successful!

Indeed! This is my home computer (laptop). Scripts used to work in iTunes, but somewhere along the way, became broken. I didn't realize Beatunes used scripting - I could have saved you much grief in trying to sort this out.

I've been trying for several months to get scripting fixed, but have had no success.. I've uninstalled/installed iTunes, Quicktime, all Apple related software, etc., as well as re-registering appropriate .dlls and programs. Very very frustrating!

Well, beaTunes (for Windows) uses scripting only for this one thing: Adding songs to a playlist - as for some reason that is much faster via scripting than via COM.

At this point I'm more or less guessing, but you could try to re-install scripting by installing http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=4780902... However, since in theory scripting is already installed, perhaps that doesn't work, either.

Sorry to not be of more help,

    Hi Hendrik -

I've recently purchased a new computer running Windows 7 64 bit. Is Beatunes supported on this platform?
when I run the installation program, I get a message "could not create the Java virtual machine."

    Hi Clayton,

Windows 7 64Bit is supported. Most likely this is a path problem.
Into which directory (full path) did you install beaTunes?

    Thanks,

    Well, that should definitely work...
    Let's see.

Please open a command shell - you can do so on Win7 by clicking on the Window-Symbol in the task bar and entering cmd in the textfield right above it.

Then navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\tagtraum industries\beaTunes-2.1.17 like this:

    cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\tagtraum industries\beaTunes-2.1.17"

    Then start beaTunes like this:

    beaTunes2.exe --l4j-debug

This should start up beaTunes and generate a file called launch4j.log. In the same directory there are also two other files: beaTunes2.l4j.ini and beaTunes2.l4j.ini.template - please send me all three files.

    Thanks,

    -hendrik
