I have a lot of albums in my library with visiting artists. In many cases, they are categorized as compilations because the album artist tags are not used and albums seem to have multiple artists. It would be nice to have beaTunes able to detect albums with same name and offer a possibility to fix the collection and album artist information.

Does the missing Album Artist inspection not do the job?

Not exactly. It seems to detect the missing Album Artists, but not if the album has been already marked as compilation. Of course, in some cases this means just a missing Album Artist but I have many albums incorrectly marked as compilation just because some of the tracks have visiting artists.

Well, the problem is that compilations typically don't have an album artist.
So in your case, you would have to fix the compilation problem first...
Do most of your mislabeled compilations artists start with the same artist name. E.g.

    Mr. x
    Mr. x featuring Mr. y

    ?

    Hi,

both examples (Madonna - "Hard Candy", Robbie Williams - "Swing when you're winning") aren't compilations. See http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compilation_album for a definition of compilations.

So in essence one would have to remove the compilation flag from those albums and then you'd be fine. Unfortunately, beaTunes currently does not have a way that supports you in doing so automatically, but I will think about it for beaTunes 3.

    Hi,

I know they aren't :) That was the original problem: how to fix albums
that are incorrectly marked as compilations and use album artist instead.

Well - at this point beaTunes can't really help you with that (again, I put it on the list for beaTunes 3). What you could do in iTunes is to turn on the column browser, select Compilations in the Artist column and manually go through all your compilations in the Album column. Then, in the main table, select all songs of a wrongly marked Album and change the compilation bit manually.

    And I know - that's no fun!

    Sorry,
