Improve the Charts view

The charts view is not very useful in my eyes. I miss a lot of things ;-):

  • scaleable cover art independent from the window size (they're to small for me on an 27" dislpay)
  • better scaling algorithm (antialiasing)
  • (optionally) show meta data like album name and artist
  • sortable list view with more meta data
  • selectable country (directly in the interface)
  • a list view could show the chart positions for multiple countries
  • additional data sources like iTunes, BandCamp, MTV, Billboard, Shazam, Last.fm
  • play music inside beaTunes
  • make only the artwork clickable (and not the background)
  • let me (or beaTunes itself) connect items with albums in my library
  • let me create playlists from the charts or at least let me select the year of the charts

    Hey,

Thanks for your suggestions. Some of them are implementable and noted. Others are difficult to impossible to implement. E.g. Billboard charts. Those are not public in a way that makes them easily usable. As a matter of fact, they are a product by a company that likes to make money... This is true for most other chart suppliers. Obviously, chart music also needs to licensed and payed etc. So none of those wishes are implementable without a third party providing the data/audio for free.

Regarding scaling: Do you really see aliasing artifacts? Can you send a screenshot and point out the issues?

    Hi,

okay, I didn't know about the costs. Well, at least Last.fm has a public API: http://www.last.fm/api/show/chart.getTopTracks. And iTunes has public access to its charts by RSS: https://rss.itunes.apple.com/

I've attached an image which shows the standard scaling of macOS compared to beaTunes (dark background).

    True. Those are options.

Is this on a retina display? What resolution?
How were you able to find the size of the original image, beaTunes used, to make that comparison?

It‘s a 27“ Display with non-retina resolution like the iMac. The screenshot is in original size. I clicked the cover in iTunes and dragged the image from the amazon website to preview. There i pressed cmd+minus until the size fits (zoom).

It is possible that beaTunes uses a differently sized image than whatever Amazon is displaying in its site. But I should look into it. Won't get to it though for the next two weeks.
