Another suggestion.

Right now when detecting duplicates the available options given the user, irrespective if its ...title or ...similar title it seems you have hard coded for the Possible Solutions and you should test if each available option truly applies.

For example: Beatunes will display the option Keep the song with the highest playcount, delete the others but the tracks can have a zero playcount.

I have tested this for duplicate bitrates,Keep the song with the highest bitrate, delete the others when the two or more tracks displayed in the list show the same bitrate of 320 kbps.

Hence my request for a change in how this is handled, because of possible problems for the users music library

Allowing the user to select an option where the output being more than one track being tested as true, what track is deleted? I would assume the first track in the list, but that may not be the users desired result.

Also always displaying all seven (7) options makes the users workflow slower as they have to manually display the columns to show if the option really does apply.

  1. Please test to ensure each Possible Solution applies before displaying it as an available option.
  2. When the user selects any possible solution, If the track list column for the selected solution is not displayed, display it and highlight the column.

    Hey Tim,

you make some pretty convincing points there. Interested in checking out the current dev snapshot? I have implemented some of your wishes.

You can get it from https://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-5-0-3-SNAPSHOT-x64.exe

    Cheers,

PS: During the next two weeks I won't be able to react to email quickly.

    Hi,

What you have changed has made the workflow a whole lot easier and a lot
    faster. This is great!

May I suggest some additional logic.

Where there are "Multiple tracks with the same album and title", or
"Keep the song with the higest bitrate", the first (number 1) options is
    to "Disable the selected songs":

     1. By default all the sings are selected.

I would suggest you highlight the song the action will affect.

Also the application mixes forward and reverse logic (as I call it),
which is not an intuative approach for the user to naturally adopt, and
    I will explain.

    For two different duplicates:

"Multiple tracks acoustically idential..." option (1) is the "keep
the song with the higest bitrate, delete the others".

    and

"Multiple tracks with the same album and title",option (1) is the
        "Disable the selected Songs."

Hope you can see that in the first case option (1) is a forward logic
result in that its positive, keeping the song and deleting others',
different to the second example where reverse logic is used where option
    (1) disables the selected song, keeping the others.

    And there are a number of descriptions what swap option (1) between;
keeping the audio file and (2) deleting or disabling the audio file.

Maybe you need to decide on:

Option (1) = Keeping the file and deleteing others

Option (2) = Keeping the file and disabling the others

So the second example would read:

"Multiple tracks with the same album and title",option (1) is the
"Keep the selected Song and delete the others"

How you can see how this makes it easier for a user to grasp,

    Tim,

    Hey there,

sorry for the very late reply—I was away and only able to answer urgent requests.

Thanks for your suggestions. They both make sense, but at this point I'm unable to implement them in beaTunes 5.

    Song Highlighting

Certainly possible and desirable. However, this would require changing much of the existing logic and framework and therefore amount to a real feature. For 5.0 that won't happen as bug-fixing and small enhancement take precedence.

    Forward/Backward Logic

Again, you've got a good point there. And again for 5.0 there is too much work involved to really address this.

Re-working this for beaTunes 6 may be an option.

    Cheers,

    -hendrik
