are you aware of beaTunes' search & replace with regular expressions? This article offers a small overview. Perhaps this helps you a bit.

Cheers,

Search & replace only applies to visible fields. This means that removing/adding columns via the
View
menu allows you to narrow/widen your search space.

Btw just got home and am trying to find this functionality. I can see it in the Mac screen shots but can find it in my Windows version. Is there a preference should I set to enable the check boxes for match case/regex/find/replace etc? I just have filter and a dropdown by Artist/../Tag. What am I missing?

I see it would help with cleaning up artist and album fields which some will find useful.Oh well. Think this would be good to extend to tags in the future. Thanks for the help anyway.Duncan

Ah, yes, you're right. Sorry, I misunderstood. Thought you were talking about id3 tags in general.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/422374742017-05-18T06:08:45Z2017-05-18T06:08:49ZTag removal

Add me as someone looking for the same solution. some of the auto-imported tags are helpful, but most are junk data like "heard on Pandora", "80s" or an artist's name or "Blues Faves"... Just because someone else likes a song or heard it on Pandora doesn't make that tag relevant for others. Also, many people add redundant tags (e.g. why "80's" when I can use the year field?)...

What would be ideal would be some way to bulk edit the list of imported or allowed tags...

Currently it looks like edit tags for tens of thousands of songs would involve a lot of tedious editing. Thinking more about that, I think it would also be potentially wasted effort, since the "tags" column isn't stored in the songs' id3 info. I've been using iTunes' "Grouping" field (and a lot of mp3tag actions) for managing tag data (e.g. a jazzy Pop song might be tagged as "Jazz, Ballad, HasVocal, Top40, AdultContemporary, Cover").

The value I see from the last.fm "tags" pulled into Beatunes is that it provides some "suggestions" for tag values that I might want to add to the "Groupings" column (which gets written to the id3 tag in the file). If my Beatunes DB gets corrupted (it's happened a few times over the years), I'd have to re-edit all those "tags" column values after they get re-imported after analysis. At least I think that's what would happen.

A master tag word cloud where I could remove imported values in bulk would be great.

Thanks for all your attention & listening. Keep up the great work!

lyle.kantrovichtag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/422374742017-05-30T08:43:06Z2017-05-30T08:43:06ZTag removal

Hey Duncan,

I'm afraid, your feature suggestion didn't make it into beaTunes 5. Not because I don't think it's useful, but because there just wasn't any more time.

Hopefully I'll get this done in a future release.

-hendrik

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/422374742017-08-02T04:49:36Z2017-08-02T04:49:39ZTag removal

also looking for a way to change EVERYTHING in a single field.

however I am looking to change artist & album info to force a file system reorganization [yes that part works behind the scenes already] for subsequent copying to a portable player. figured out the find/replace needed to do the job, but without a way to limit the scope of the changes it hits EVERYTHING in ALL editable fields with the added text.

regEx syntax:
find: ^(.+)$
repl: prepend $1 append

anyone have a workaround or an idea if/when field limiting might be available? tia

Scotttag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/422374742017-08-02T06:12:40Z2017-08-02T06:12:42ZTag removal

update...
just realized I glossed over the detail above to limit the scope by removing fields from the View area [post #3], but that's not very useful for me.

one of the things [and easiest to describe] that I planned to do is prepend the album name with its year...adding a natural sort order to a device that otherwise sucks at organizing.

is there a way to limit changes while other editable fields are visible? or a reference to other fields that can be dropped into the replace text box?

If not, where do I find the API class/info to address each field? don't really want to go there but I might need to

btw...I know it's a little off topic but it's the only place on the site that mentions regex beside an article that barely scratched the regex surface. just trying to keep the references together.

Scotttag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/422374742017-08-02T10:45:59Z2017-08-02T10:45:59ZTag removal

No problem. Regex is typically a superuser feature. "Normal" people tend to avoid it.

hendrik
