very much possible that one of the libraries beaTunes uses does.

creates ".new" files when adjusting the padding in mp3 id3
tags.<br>
What jaudiotagger (btw, a great id3 library) does, is create a
".new" file, write some padding (i.e. empty space), then copy the
audio portion of the original file to the ".new" file. Once that
succeeded, the original file is renamed to ".old" and the new file
it renamed to the original file name. Obviously the last steps seem
to occasionally fail on your system, otherwise you wouldn't have to
deal with these leftovers. As to why there is a failure, I can't
tell without looking at logs.</p>

<p>It seems that the original file contains the beatunes result and
the .new files contain older - and now useless - variations of the
files. I have more then 800 of these files.</p>
<p>I think I run a list of the files against matching mp3's und
simply delete the .new files.</p>
<p>But there ist one more that I discovered:</p>
<p>The following track from Runrig was touched by Beatunes but has
not got a PUID. The exact track istself is known by
Musicbrainz.org: <a href=

<p>So why has it happened that the track got no PUID and how can I
idetify and rerun (only) these tracks?</p>

<p>as beaTunes seems to be the one creating the .new files, you can
safely delete them as long as beaTunes is not running.</p>
<p>Regarding the missing PUID. There is no way in beaTunes to
determine, whether a song already has a PUID or not. However, when
running the 'Import from MusicIP' task, beaTunes is smart enough to
first check whether the song already has a PUID before it looks up
the PUID. So running <em>only</em> that task, just for looking up
PUIDs, should be fairly quick for all files as the ones that
already have a PUID don't cause a lot of extra work.</p>
<p>Also, please keep in mind that the beaTunes PUIDs are obtained
from MusicIP/Amplifind, not MusicBrainz. So it's always possible
that there are slight discrepancies.</p>
