I don't see a column for it, though, or any way to see it exposed in the UI.

There is none. It's an internal figure.

What does "popularity" include, is it based more on my library or a global database?

It's based only on the central beaTunes database: In essence, how many people have submitted data for a given song.

I noticed some other fields I hadn't observed before, like Play Frequency (which I haven't figured out yet) and Play/Skip ratio. Do those factor into Popularity at all?

They don't.

Play frequency is the number of times you played a song normalized over the time since it was added. So a song that you've owned just a very short time, but played a lot, may have the same frequency as one you've owned for a while, and played even more.

Play/skip ratio is just that: The number of times you played a song vs. the number of times you skipped it.

Neither of these is new, but you can use them in matchlist filters (not rules).

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-05T20:33:41Z2017-06-05T20:33:41ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

BTW: Have you tried "Play similar songs" yet?
It's in the context menu...

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-07T15:34:23Z2017-06-07T15:34:23ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

I haven't, but I'll take a look at it.

For iTunes-based libraries, does beaTunes increase the play count, last played, etc in iTunes when played via beaTunes?

evansthompsontag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-07T15:37:33Z2017-06-07T15:37:33ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

For iTunes-based libraries, does beaTunes increase the play count, last played, etc in iTunes when played via beaTunes?

It should. If it doesn't, it's a bug.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-08T14:49:11Z2017-06-08T14:49:11ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

I've just tried it on EA3. The idea is cool. It appears to be resource-intensive, as there's a fair amount of the spinning blue beachball and other beaTunes functions are significantly slower. The Activity Monitor also shows a higher amount of activity than usual.

iTunes did report updated play counts and last played dates.

Are all songs similar to the initial song (song A), or are they more related to the next song? Song C is similar to song B, etc until song Z is similar to song Y but might not be similar to song A?

I couldn't tell if it supported selecting multiple songs first. While I can select multiple songs first, the UI suggests it's for a single song seed.

It'd be cool to have a reminder what song was originally selected and what the next few songs (say 5) will be.

evansthompsontag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-08T15:31:52Z2017-06-08T15:31:52ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

While the first song plays, beaTunes builds the internal "radio" playlist. During that time beaTunes switches the mouse cursor to blue beachball to indicate that it is quite busy.

All songs are selected. because they are similar to A. However, an attempt is made to establish an order in which songs following each other are more similar to each other than just than others. The idea is to set a certain kind of mood with the seed song.

Yeah... I know. There's really no UI for it. Unfortunately, for 5 I didn't have the time to come up with something that really works. I settled for this, because you really don't care what's going to happen, if you really use it as "radio". The important part is, that you can skip to the next song, and that functionality is there. You can also insert songs to be played next (via the context menu).

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-08T15:35:24Z2017-06-08T15:35:24ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

Cool. Kind of like what Genius Shuffle (?) could have been but never was.

In some ways I really liked Genius though...

Up to 300.

So it should get you through a day.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-08T16:20:18Z2017-06-08T16:20:18ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

I did/do, too. It's one of the things that lead me to find your app, actually. Genius became very...limited in its selections, and more and more frequently songs weren't available for Genius matching.

I wonder if cutting that back would help it feel snappier. According to last.fm, I rarely go over 100 a day, plus I'd be likely to want to switch it up at least once during that time.

evansthompsontag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/426844722017-06-08T16:22:35Z2017-06-08T16:22:35ZbeaTunes v5 EA2: Popularity?

I might get a little quicker, though not a whole lot, I think.

hendrik
