Something, whether it be the application or otherwise,
seems to adjust the rating if it is 0. It seems not to actually
apply this to the tag but does affect the list order when using the
rating column. I want to switch this off and if i can't then feel
as if I should be able to.

From the top of my head I believe the secondary sort order for
rating is name, i.e. if the rating is the same,
the songs should be sorted alphabetically by the song title.

Also: Do the songs really have the same rating?
Internally, ratings are numbers with a greater resolution than just
the five stars. Does hover with the mouse over the rating reveal
the actual rating? Perhaps that gives you some clues.

The gray ratings are computed by iTunes. Currently, there's no
way to turn those off.
