Hi everyone,

I noticed several transitions over the last few releases of how lists and dialogs are displayed on 4k monitors. Currently dialogs are well legible, but the font size on the main window is too large for me. Is there any possibilty to change the display font?

Best,
Thilo

    Hey Thilo,

currently you cannot set the font size manually.
Just so that I know what exactly you are seeing, would you mind sending a screenshot?

    Thanks,

Thank you, Hendrik for the prompt reply. I attach a screen shot of a full screen window on my 4k monitor under Windows 10.0.14393 Build 14393. The default text scale for my system is 150%. Note that menus and dialog windows look fine. beaTunes main window elements are displayed in a font size comparable to a size 18 in a Word document (on screen 100%)

    Hey Thilo,

as you perhaps know, beaTunes uses Java 8 to run. While the 4k/Retina/HiDPI support for OS X has been stellar for years, the same unfortunately, cannot be said for Windows, simply because Windows hardware has been lagging behind a little. That's certainly over by now, Windows hardware has caught up and there should be better support. This is why I made quite an effort with beaTunes 4.6 to support HiDPI displays on Windows, even though Java 8 still has many bugs HiDPI bugs. Most of those will probably be solved with Java 9, but that won't happen until 3/2017.

That's part of the story. The other part is certainly, that the font is meant to be slightly larger than the regular font. Also, the current beaTunes 4.6 UI does contain some oddities, like the font size of the time and remaining time left and right of the player bar. Also on the left and right edge of the window, those vertical buttons don't have correctly scaled fonts. These and more issues will be addressed in beaTunes 5.

That all said, the standard font size for beaTunes is 12pt, not 18pt. Does the font size look better to you, when you reset your scaling to 100% (probably requires beaTunes restart to take effect)?

    Cheers,

Thanks again, Hendrik, for your answer.

If I change the scaling to 100%, the overall size is smaller as expected. However the relation between the "system" font (Menu and Dialogs) to he application window font in beaTunes remains the same. There is still a significant size difference between the two which IMHO should have roughly the same size.. Anyway, I need to scale to 150% on my 31" Monitor in order to have the right experience. Which BTW works well for all other applications I use. In this sense, I would appreciate something like a "BEATUNES_FONTSIZE" variable to have some kind of control over this.

    Best,
    Thilo

    Hey Thilo,

    I understand the desire.

If you're interested, please try the current dev snapshot from https://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-4-6-7-SNAPSHOT-x64.exe

To install, first stop beaTunes (should it be running), then run the installer.
After the installer ran through, don't start beaTunes. Instead, please open the file C:\Program Files\beaTunes4\beaTunes4.l4j.ini (path may be different depending on where you installed beaTunes) with a text editor and change the parameter at the bottom of the file:

    -Dfont.size=12

    To something like

    -Dfont.size=9

Save the file and then start beaTunes.
The look probably won't be perfect, but perhaps suits your needs better.

Also, please note that the file may be overwritten with the unmodified version, should you run the beaTunes installer again.

    Hope this helps,

    -hendrik

    Hey Hendrik,

this is really great! A font size of 9 works perfect for me. I did not expect an immediate implementation of such a feature. I really appreciate your help. Very straightforward and hard to find these days!

Well, I'm aware that the experience on some Windows hardware/software versions isn't perfect and am willing to improve it. This was basically just a small config option, which will have to be re-applied when you update the software. So this is not perfect either. But again, I'm happy to scratch your itch.

    Enjoy the weekend,
