Does beatunes support BPM for lossless files?

There are a bunch of different lossless file formats.

beaTunes 3.5 supports Apple Lossless on both Windows (32-Bit) and Mac. There is also some rudimentary support for FLAC.

beaTunes 4 (to be released soon, betas on http://www.beatunes.com/earlyaccess.html) will fully support Apple Lossless, FLAC, OGG, and on Windows also WMA lossless.

If in doubt, just try the free trial.

I'd also like to see support for flac/.cue (one flac file for a number of songs; accompanied by a "table of contents" in the .cue file), .wv/cue - wavepack similar, and .ape which is monkey's audio. These are all lossless formats with wide circulation in certain communities. The bits per sample and sample rate appear at a number of points including 16 bits per sample/44KHz, 16/88, 24/44, 24/88, 24/96, and 24/192.
Ideally, I want to end up with all of my music playable under a single UI. I also like to send the audio over the LAN to an AppleTV 3rd gen. That has an optical out I feed to an audiophile grade external DAC on my serious stereo. The DAC can run up to 24/192 over its USB interface or coax digital audio line (from the TOSLink optical out of the ATV).

It would be great to have those formats supported and to have Beatunes collect and assemble the metadata.

    What is possible?

    Hey Mark,

I think it's interesting to add support for something like chapters or multiple tracks per recording in the future (especially when thinking of DJ sets with multiple main tracks). However, at this point I have no idea when that will be or whether it will ever happen.

Regarding file formats: Being able to play wavepack or ape is probably not hard, as long as a non-GPL decoder is already included in FFmpeg. However, tagging is a different story.

Would it be useful to you at all, if you couldn't tag these files, i.e. if they were effectively read-only?

Regarding sample rate/bit depth, none of the combinations you mention should be a problem right now for FLAC. If you run into any issues, please let me know.

Airplay: On OS X a connected AirPlay device is exposed as just another output device. beaTunes can detect this device and send (decoded PCM) data to it. When doing so, beaTunes attempts to honor the sample rate and bit depth the file is encoded in. If for some reason the device does not accept this format, the file is down-sampled before it's sent, usually to 44.1kHz/16bit/stereo.

On Windows, Airplay is not supported.

    Cheers,

    -hendrik
