tool to quickly 1/2 BPM on a bunch of songs
I just purchased beaTunes, and I'm very impressed with the product. This was even before I noticed the ability to write custom plugins (noticed that this morning), so I'm rather excited to look into writing my own (when I have time..).
The one feature that would be helpful would be to be able to select a bunch of songs and cut the BPM in 1/2. Every song that looked obviously wrong (so far) were by a factor of 2, which makes sense. Does something like this exist, I haven't found it, if it has.
I'm also wondering if the BPM algorithm could take genre into account when calculating BPM. Not sure if this would help with knowing if something should be 90 vs 180 or not....

Hey Neil,
there is no such tool - however, you could simply have beaTunes re-analyze those songs and pre-set the BPM range, which should have the same effect.
Genre definitely does have an influence, especially when you are into ballroom (see for example this academic article ).
beaTunes 4 will feature a completely rewritten BPM algorithm that takes some of these things into account. For 3.5 there will be no more changes though.
If you decide to code up something, let me know, I'll be glad to help.
Cheers,

Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to version 4. Any update on
when it will be released? Will the 64bit be officially supported at that
time too (I see you have a beta 64bit version for 3.5).
I think your idea of selecting and picking the range is a good solution. I
would like to to look at writing a plugin at some time though, if I do so I
will let you know.
Thanks,
Neil

Hey Neil,
I hope to release beaTunes 4 some time in July (no promises).
It will definitely support 64 bit on Windows (OS X has been 64 bit only for quite a while).
Cheers,

-There is a beatunes keyboard shortcut. Highlight track(s) hold ctrl and - to halve or ctrl and = to double.
or
-Re-analyze
or
-Make a script that manipulates bpm tag/field data to divide by 2.
or
Try a couple songs with a alternative program (like MixMeister BPM Analyser) to see if you get similar results. Any dj programs will have a bpm scan feature.
