How is the color calculated

I'm loving the app! I have 23,000 mp3 files and I'm, at last, getting to really enjoy the collection.
I've done some searching and reading but I haven't found a technical discussion for how the color RBG & HSB are calculated, or, more importantly, what they mean. I'm not looking for the specific formulas but I am looking to understand what the RGB & HSB values represent so that I can better use the color information. A link to the more technical info would be nice.
