What about fixing up cover art?
What about checking the Musicbrainz Database as well.
Are the bpm and keys stored in fields where populair DJ software (Traktor Pro) can read them?

    Hi John,

    Thanks for your message.

    To answer your questions:

    • beaTunes does not fix cover art
    • what exactly would you like beaTunes to check on the Musicbrainz server?
    • bpm and key are stored in the corresponding id3 fields, so traktor pro should be able to read them

    Hope this helps,

    -hendrik

-Is coverart fixing in the pipeline?
-Musicbrainz is user maintained DB. It contains much more rare files.
-Is there Camelot notation (1A - 12B notation) support? As far as I know Traktor stores key and bpm in special fields.

    Hi John,

    • coverart in the pipeline: no, not for now
    • I'm familiar with Musicbrainz - my question is, how you want to interact with it?
    • I used to support Camelot notation, but the "owner" of that notation makes intellectual property claims that require other vendors to get a license from them, they say. See http://ifnotwhynot.me/mixed-in-key-not-playing-nice That's why it's unfortunately not supported in beaTunes anymore
    • I'd be really surprised if traktor stored the key in some special field or can't read it from the standard field (TKEY). The BPM beaTunes stores in the regular BPM field and another one for BPM plus fractions called fBPM. This is the one that Traktor uses, too. However, to actually write those tags you have to turn that feature on in the beaTunes general preferences (embed non-iTunes-Fields).

    Hi,

I too would like some further answers before I purchase.

    1. Is all data writen to id3 tags? Does it support id3 2.3 and can you ask it to convert any mp3 which doesn't have id3 2.3 upto 2.3?
    2. Is album art still not in the pipeline? I feel lit would be really useful to get the album art downloaded along with metadata.
    3. I use serato Scratch. Is it possible to get the mood to be written to a specific tag, or perhaps into the description tag. Will serato be able to easily read the mood and key tags?
    4. Will it in any way affect serato's own music analysis?

    Thanks

    Hi Tom.

    1. beaTunes2 tells iTunes to write all the data iTunes actually can write straight to the tags. Other tags, like key, are written by beaTunes and of the id3 tags are already in version 2.3 they are written in 2.3. beaTunes does no id3 version conversion whatsoever.
    2. Everybody feels that that is useful - me included. Unfortunately, getting this feature has to do with copyright issues. Moving artwork from the private iTunes database into the files (i.e. embedding it) is in the pipeline though.
    3. beaTunes2 does not write the mood tag - it is just capable of importing it and sticks it to the other tags. There will probably better mood support in beaTunes3.
    4. It shouldn't, but that's certainly a question you'd have to ask Serato.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Hendrik,

Thanks for the answers. Here are a few more questions.

    • If I buy a licence for beatunes, will it last for beatunes 3?
    • Where does beatunes stick the mood tag to? Can it be defined? Can I even create my own tag called mood that itunes would pickup and then create a simple way of expressing it say 1 for extremely heavy 10 for extremely chilled?
    • Can you not get picture requests from 3rd party services, or allow 3rd parties to create plugins that help to get album artwork? At the moment I can't get artwork from iTunes as none of my music is purchased through iTunes, how would beatunes help me?

    Thanks again.

    Hey Tom,

    • In general a beaTunes 2 license is only good for beaTunes 2. However, if beaTunes 3 is released only a short time after you bought your license, you will receive an automatic update. What constitutes a 'short time'? Well, last time it was roughly one month (http://blog.beatunes.com/2009/02/just-released-beatunes-200b.html). It will be similar this time. Additionally, the upgrade price (from 2 to 3) will stay stable at 11.95$.
    • Before there will be a final release, I'll post at least one 'Early Access' (EA) release in the blog at http://blog.beatunes.com/search/label/Early%20Access
    • Of course there are 3rd party services. And as far as I know, they all charge license fees. I could certainly pay those, but then beaTunes would get pricier. Regarding plugins - beaTunes allows you to write plugins (http://www.beatunes.com/beatunes-plugin-api.html, ), so someone could certainly do that. So far it hasn't happened though.

    Ok Thanks Hendrik,

Is version 3 going to be released in the next month? :)

    What's your estimated schedule?

I can't say anything definite about the release date. Typically, I release software when it's ready, not when my imaginary marketing department says it should be released. At this point I think a release within the next month is unfortunately unlikely. That said, I'm working hard on getting this out asap.

OK - I hope that was cloudy enough. Don't hold me to it!
