Audio volume in Bluesound Node

Hi there. I have all of my music stored on a WD NAS drive which I access on my Mac with the Apple Music app. In my living room though I use the Bluesound Node 2i to play my NAS stored Flac files. The volumes were all over the place - even though I had ticked the Track Gain box in the Replay Gain settings.

Someone recommended I use your app so I have downloaded it and purchased it. I have run Analyse on all songs. Will this now level out the playback on the Node or do I need to do something else?

Kind regards.

Mark

    Hi Mark,

when beaTunes does ReplayGain (or Volume Normalization) analysis, it computes by how much the track should be made louder or quieter to hit a target reference level. This gain (the diff between actual and desired level) is written to the file,

    1. if embedding of non-iTunes fields is turned on in the general preferencs before analysis or
    2. you are using a folder-based library (i.e., not based on iTunes or Music.app).

Is either one the case? Note that if you are using an iTunes-based library, turning embedding on after analysis, will not re-tag all files.

Assuming the tags have been stored in your files, any player that honors these tags should perform the correct adjustment when playing back your files.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Hendrik.

My files are in a NAS drive and stored in the public folder of that drive but I then believe it is grouped under the Apple Music folder structure.

    Kind regards

    Mark

    Hey Mark,

Whether your library is iTunes/Music.app-based it folder based does not depend on where your files are stored.

Please see https://blog.beatunes.com/2015/01/different-libraries-for-different-needs.html for an explanation.

You can check in the beaTunes general preferences, whether you have a folder-based collection or one based on the Apple Music app—and also, whether embedding is turned on. If you have trouble interpreting the preferences, please simply send a screenshot of the beaTunes general preference pane.

    Cheers,

    -hendrik

So would you recommend as I am using Bluesound as my main music app to have a folder based collection?

    Kind regards.

    Hey Mark,

if you are using beaTunes together with the Apple Music.app, please do the following (see also here):

    • In Music.app/iTunes make sure that SoundCheck Volume Normalization is turned on (somewhere in the preferences)
    • Open the beaTunes general preferences
    • Make sure the box "Embed non-Music.app/iTunes fields..." is checked
    • Also make sure that the box "Force overwriting of fields..." is checked
    • Re-analyze your files for ReplayGain info

After analysis, the ReplayGain tags should be embedded in your files.

    Explanations

    • "Embed non-Music.app/iTunes fields.." ensures that beaTunes not only writes the information into its own database, but also into the files.
    • "Force overwriting of fields..." makes sure that a newly computed value is written to the file even if it is identical to the value already in the internal database.

The latter is important, if you have already analyzed the files once with embedding turned off.

    Hope this helps,

It seems to have levelled out the sound and not be jumping around so ‘violently’ with different audio volumes but there can still be a bit of sa jump between songs.

    Thanks

    Kind regards

But this sounds like the mechanism of computing, embedding, and playing with adjusted gain now works, right?

Let me then close this issue.
