Audio normalization / ReplyGain

Hi Hendrik

I was toying around with the Audio Normalization (ReplayGain) settings in beaTunes 5.2.36, because I can't seem to get it quite right. Songs from different albums by the same artist play at varying volumes when put together in a playlist/matchlist. The volume difference is distracting and unpleasant.

I play the playlists/songs within beaTunes (and not in Apple Music).

I wonder if you could advise on the optimal settings to achieve maximum equality in output volume across my library?

   Hi Alexander

   If you're creating playlists from different albums, I'd skip the album ReplayGain and just use track ReplayGain. That's what I do; I play my music using IINA or foobar2000 mobile on my smartphone, and it usually works out fine. Sometimes there seem to be differences, but that's usually due to the dynamic range or because the song is poorly mixed and clips.

   Only using Track ReplayGain and not Album ReplayGain, does that not create
   volume issues within albums?

   Of course, you can set both and then choose which one to use in the player depending on how you want to listen. But be careful: Apple Music ignores this and calculates its own values. They think they always know and can do everything better.

   Personally, I rarely listen to a full album, and when I do, I accept the loss of dramatic flow with TrackReplayGain only. However, this doesn't actually cause any volume issues. The bigger problem is when sound engineers produce music with clipping. I exclusively calculate TrackReplayGain using TruePeak and -15 LUFS but that needs a little bit more time during analysis.

   One more quick tip outside of beaTunes: never write your phone number or email address directly in posts. Cybercriminals always love that kind of thing.

   Ah yes, it was sent from my private email address. Silly. Thanks for pointing that out.

   About the Track ReplayGain: I had no idea I can choose a ReplayGain-setting for a single playlist, apart from the Analysis settings. Where in beaTunes can I adjust that?

   I use beaTunes 5.2.36 on a 2021 MacBook Pro.

   You can't set this on a per-playlist basis. When beaTunes analyzes ReplayGain, the information is written to the corresponding track tags.
   I play my music on my Mac using IINA, where I can choose whether to use track-based or album-based ReplayGain. However, I exclusively use track-based ReplayGain.

   On my iPhone, I use foobar2000 mobile, and there, too, I can choose which option to use during playback.

   In the track analysis settings (CMD-S), you can configure it however you like for all selected tracks.
