Do I read this correctly: "12,000+ albums" = 178,749 items? That's quite the library!

In the beaTunes general preferences, if you have "Automatically export playlists" turned on? If so, please turn it off. With such a large library, it will totally kill performance.

Also in the beaTunes general preferences, do you have "Synchronize on window activation" on or off? If it's on, please turn it off.

With these settings, do you see all tracks in beaTunes? Or are there still some missing?

If you have ~178,749 items in your iTunes library, it actually completed the task before, but it apparently failed to display stuff. Potentially, because it was busy exporting playlists...

admittedly, the sheer size of your library and the (I assume) slow external drive are challenges to beaTunes.

All tunes are now showing up in the library tab.
I have not run a new analysis or inspection. Considering the sheer size of my library, I’m wondering if you might have some other suggestions re: settings for both analysis and inspection that i can use that won’t take weeks of computing time? Or perhaps some ideas as to how best to approach doing analysis and/or inspection of my music library.

All tunes are now showing up in the library tab.

That's good news! :-)

To make sure you have the latest changes from iTunes you may need to run
File
->
Synchronize
from time to time. The first time this is probably fairly slow, but beaTunes does some smart "diff'ing" that should reduce the sync times at least within a single run of beaTunes.

I’m wondering if you might have some other suggestions re: settings for both analysis and inspection that i can use that won’t take weeks of computing time?

Yes.

Inspection

You cannot limit inspection to just a certain number of songs. However, you can limit it to certain inspectors. To do so, please open the preferences and go to the inspection tab. There make sure that you only enable inspectors you are interested in (fewer is better, i.e. faster). Please make sure you disable any inspectors that have to do with cover art. Those are especially slow.

Analysis

You can limit analysis to songs or playlists. You don't have to use
Analyze All
. In fact, because of a timeout, that's what failed before. However, you might still want to try, because it's convenient. And perhaps, with sync and export turned off, chances are better that it actually works.

To analyze just a playlist, select the playlist in the tree view on the left and then click on
Analyze
in the context menu or the
File
menu.

Whenever you choose to analyze your library, beaTunes will show you a bunch of analysis options. There are two important rules when choosing options:

Do not select anything that you don't understand. Changes cannot be undone. When in doubt, make sure you have a backup.

The fewer options you select, the faster analysis will be.

There's an (older) article that explains the background (http://blog.beatunes.com/2015/01/audio-analysis-options-explained.html).

If you let me know, why you want to analyze your library, what your goals are, perhaps I can help you to choose the right options. Most people need only Fingerprints, BPM, and Color. Optionally, add Mood, Instrumentation and Popularity Data (at the bottom). The last three all require a reasonably fast Internet connection.

Keep in mind that each option makes analysis take longer. In particular, stay away from AcousticBrainz Submit, Segments and Similarity, Audio Normalization and Silence Detection. The latter tasks require substantial audio processing and reading of all your files.

Hope this helps,

-hendrik

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-11T13:56:51Z2017-08-11T13:56:52ZJust doesn't want to work!

Thanks Hendrik,
I will attempt some of your suggestions.
My goal is to be able to create playlists much like genius does in itunes.
However, genius will not work with over 100,000 songs.
So what I have done as a work around is to create two libraries.
My regular full library and then a library under 100,000 and genius then generates a playlist.
However, this leaves a large portion of my library out.
PT

P QTtag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-11T14:02:41Z2017-08-11T14:02:41ZJust doesn't want to work!

Hey Peter,

for something like Genius (in beaTunes: Play similar songs, in the context menu), you should analyze for BPM, Color and Popularity Data (last option at the bottom). Skip everything else. If the analysis works out kinda OK, do a second run with Instrumentation and Mood.

-hendrik

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-11T14:05:18Z2017-08-11T14:05:18ZJust doesn't want to work!

One more thing:

In the general preferences, there is an option that allows you to embed fields that iTunes does not support. Turning this on before running an analysis, makes it so that all values are written to your files, not just to the internal database. This means that should the internal database crash for some reason, you don't have to repeat the analysis. The disadvantage is of course, that beaTunes will modify all your files. For the regular fields, it delegates this kind of task to iTunes.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-15T09:00:59Z2017-08-15T09:00:59ZJust doesn't want to work!

Hey Peter,

just wanted to check in with you and mention that I have just release v5.0.4. It contains a couple of fixes especially for things like "Analyze All" for a large collection like yours.

If you are still analyzing your data, wait with updating until the analysis is complete.

Also, please note that upon updating, beaTunes will make some changes to its internal database, which will take a while. Don't force kill it, while it makes those changes.

Cheers,

-hendrik

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-15T15:13:35Z2017-08-15T15:13:36ZJust doesn't want to work!

Hi Hendrik
I hope this note finds you well.
However, I am sad to report that I can’t get beaTunes to do anything.
It will not analyze even a single song. I’ve turned off everything except for analyze BPM and the system still refuses to do anything.
So on that note and unfortunately, I am done with this version of beaTunes. I have let it run, uninterrupted, for days on end.

The trial period expiration is only checked when the application is started. So as long as you don't restart beaTunes, it won't matter.

That is good to know.
Even though I am only analysing BPM + MOOD, the system currently tells me it will take approximately 4 days to complete.
If it works, I will be only too happy to purchase the product.

as mentioned before, the best choice for playlist creation with Play similar songs would have been BPM, Color and Popularity Data. Just BPM and Mood probably won't lead to very good results (but one never knows). Also, leaving Mood out in a first run probably would have saved you some time.

In any case: I'm glad the analysis now starts as it should!

Thanks for your patience.

PS: Even if the trial expires, beaTunes comes with a decent refund policy.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/431859362017-08-22T03:41:34Z2017-08-22T03:41:34ZJust doesn't want to work!

Wow Hendrik,
