Here's what I did to go back to version 4.

However, the problem you encountered is indicative of a corrupt database. Most likely the corruption was simply not detected by 4 (5 is better at that). To get beaTunes 5 to work, I recommend to rebuild the database (via the
Tools
menu). Note that this means that you will loose all data that's not embedded in your audio files. For folder-based libraries that's no problem, because all data is always embedded. For iTunes-based libraries it depends on what options you had enabled when you analyzed songs. This article explains the details. It also mentions, that you can embed your beaTunes data using
Tools
->
Embed non-iTunes fields
. This is something you might want to do, if you are going back to 4 but plan on going to 5 eventually.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T15:08:18Z2017-06-14T15:08:18ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

And if you really want to go back to version 4, I recommend attempting to repair the database (also in the
Tools
menu).

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T15:08:54Z2017-06-14T15:08:54ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

And just to be clear: The repair should be done while running beaTunes 4.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T15:27:39Z2017-06-14T15:27:43ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

I repaired the database in 4 after restoring it and then tried the upgrade to 5 again.
Yes. Unfortunately, the repair in 4 does not always satisfy 5. Only solution is then to recreate in 5 or just keep on using 4.

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T15:46:29Z2017-06-14T15:46:30ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

That's one thing that I have not found clear documentation regarding. If I recreate the database it says data stored in the database is lost. That makes sense but data is that exactly? Anything that's not embedded in the files?

jessemtag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T16:01:25Z2017-06-14T16:01:25ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

Exactly.

See http://blog.beatunes.com/2013/10/so-where-exactly-does-beatunes-sto...

hendriktag:help.beatunes.com,2009-07-24:Comment/427706482017-06-14T17:43:10Z2017-06-14T17:43:11ZUpgrade from 4.xx auf 5.00

I propose it would be helpful to have that clarification in the program and not in a blog post. ;-)

jessem
