After New Matchlist, lost all playlists and genius lists, then back again

Hi

I just upgraded from 2 to 3. I had already run the early release and all was/is fine.

My library is 8000 items, 37GB, all inspected, tagged, beats counted, colored, etc. All fine.

Today I selected a song and issued the New Matchlist command.

Then I was exploring the resulting list of songs, double clicking them to listen in iTunes.

Suddenly returning from iTunes all the playlists were showing as empty, no songs on them.

Don't recall if Library (Music) was showing as empty.

So I quit and restarted, it hung beach balling. Finally was able to quit and restart, and then things returned to normal.

iTunes is happy and fine. beaTunes seems to be recovered.

Here are the log messages from the period in question. I'm OK again now, so I provide this only in hopes of being helpful.

Cheers
Russ

    WAIT
Actually all the "colors" are gone, the color labels gone from all the songs.
    But the BPMs are there.
Is there any kind of backup of the songs database, or would I have to reanalyze to get the colors back?
    Thanks
    Russ

    Hi Russ,

it sounds like something in the sync with iTunes went wrong and beaTunes purged songs from the library it assumed to be deleted from iTunes. Unfortunately, the system log does not contain any useful information for beaTunes. All the juicy stuff is in http://help.beatunes.com/kb/troubleshooting/where-are-the-beatunes-...

    Are your colors still gone?

Unless you created a backup yourself or you checked the "embed non-iTunes fields" box in the general preferences before analyzing, there is no backup.

A similar problem just happened to me. I opened beaTunes 3 for the second time today, but this time the following are all missing from my library: Color, Key, Tags, and Mood. But I didn't do any updating of either beaTunes or iTunes between this morning (when they were all there) and this afternoon when everything is gone. I haven't even restarted my computer or anything. I don't understand anything in the logs folder, but I attached it as a zip file.

If all this data is gone, then I am pretty angry about it since it took me ages to enter it into beaTunes. So if this is really gone, I want to make sure this never happens again. Especially since I didn't do anything to make it disappear and I have no idea why it is gone. I don't really understand what your solution mentioned above means. How do I create a backup myself? And what exactly do I need to backup to ensure this does not happen again? Secondly, what exactly does it mean if I check the "embed non-iTunes fields" box? What exactly am I embedding? Where is it being embedded? What are the implications of embedding non-iTunes data with my use of iTunes?

    Hi,

I checked your logs and yes - it was unfortunately a synchronization failure.

    To answer your questions:

    • Creating a backup: Like any other software, beaTunes keeps it data somewhere. You can backup those files the same way you back up any other data on your computer (provided you keep any backups at all)
    • Embedding non-iTunes fields: Usually beaTunes only stores color etc. in its internal database. However, it can also (additionally) store those values in your mp3 files. To do this, check the "embed non-iTunes fields" box in the beaTunes preferences, before you analyze any data. Embedding values allows to recover them from the files should the database fail for some reason.

In any case, I believe I have fixed the bug that led to the failure you experienced.
The fix isn't released yet, but if you're interested in using it, install http://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-3-0-5-SNAPSHOT-jre-win.exe (this is a dev-snapshot).

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I really appreciate all your help.

    1. I do keep online backups. Unfortunately, I don't think any beaTunes files were set to be backed up. I want to change the online backup to cover beaTunes. What are the names of the files that I should backup? If I have a problem in the future, what is the name of the file that I should restore?

    2. I will set up to "embed non-iTunes fields." I am still a little confused about it, though. Where in the file is the info being embeded? If I "Get Info" on a file in iTunes does any of this info show up in weird places, like the comments section? Once the info is embeded are fields like Tags or Mood able to be read by other programs or even searched by Windows 7 (like how I can search artist or year)?

Thanks again for all your help!

    Hi,

    1. On Windows 7 the internal database is in c:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\tagtraum industries\beaTunes\database. Note that the AppData folder may be hidden - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial151.html contains instructions to make it visible.
    2. One can store additional data in mp3 files via id3 tags (http://www.id3.org/). That's also where album, title etc. are usually stored. id3 has standard tags for things like key and bpm, but not for color, tags or mood. Those beaTunes specific values are stored in TXXX frames, not comments. They could be visible to other programs, but usually aren't. It's very unlikely that you could search for them just using Windows 7.

    Hope this answers your questions,

    -hendrik
