hi,
My itunes library has all been updated and all the songs have received the BPM, only took like 5 days non stop for 35,000+ songs, anyhow after doing all of this i expected top be able to get some playlists happening from the application.

Say i choose
In the music 2010 remix has a 128 BPM and listed as electronica / Dance

I click new matchlist, select the song again when the new window opens, go down to the mid left section and change it to use rule set named and i choose similar BPM and then click Ok, no other rules are placed , then it states it cant find any matching songs, i lower it to 40% and i still get nothing, along with trying out the other rules say songs BPM 100.

why is this software not workings/ its the only reason o bought it for, i could just use itunes genius easier then beatunes. So im kinda annoyed after 5 days of getting my whole library fixed/updated it came back with 0 results.

    Hi Shane,

first of all - sorry for the late reply. I was on vacation until today.

About the issue: If you have to lower the match quality to 37% that would indicate that you have at least three rules in effect. BPM may only contribute a third of the overall score. Frankly, without seeing the actual settings for the 'default' ruleset that you seem to be using, I can't comment too much about the match percentage.

here is a pic of the default- i have edited it to be just similar bpm 1.0 and i get Zero results, when i go to similar genre/rear default preferance it comes up with only the same album mainly as shown above.
Given at least 75% of my itunes is house music, ministry of sound, global underground, hed kandi there are plenty of songs to be matched with but yet beatunes is letting me down.

So tell me how is it meant to be working properly then, i gathered just using BPM as its only rule should match plenty of songs.

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for this. There seems to be something wrong, I have to look into. I'll try to get back to you tomorrow - hopefully with more insight.

    Hi Shane,

I was able to reproduce the problem and believe I have a fix.

    Could you please try:

    http://www.beatunes.com/download/beaTunes-2-1-13-SNAPSHOT-jre-win.exe

    Does it fix the issue?

hi, i just downloaded it, is it just a updated version of what i had? also does the same program work on my mac?
with all of the colour codes where is that stored in itunes files? as in does the song file have this placed within it, or its a beatunes thing that saves it within the beatunes program. as i was thinking of copying my library to my mac so they are all up to date and both my libraries are in sync..

I will try it all out tonight and keep u posted, as over the w/end i got the colours added to all my songs to be sure to help sync songs, but another issue i found was say i chose Teenage dream as the one to be matched, it came up with songs but a few of the songs were duplicates, say shattered glass was listed 3 times as it was on 3 diff albums. dirtee cash by dizee rascal listed twice. this is when i made sure no duplicate albums was chosen.

ok, tried out some simple enough songs and im getting annoyed by this program.

I added screen shots of the settings and so tell me how its wrong, as eagle rock a good old classic song by cool daddy, how the hell does Bonkers a dance mix, riverside by sidney samson, ray of light by madonna get placed within the matchlist?

at least itunes genius did better matching.. and i increased the matching criteria, similar genres etc

    Hi Shane,

iTunes' Genius is based on a technique called collaborative filtering (short CF) that looks at a large number of user libraries and tries to find common preferences. I.e. user A likes artist X, there he also like artist Y, because user B liked artist X and Y. This ensures a fairly high homogeneity in results, but it does not take any musical features into account.

beaTunes only looks at the features you specify - some of them being musical, someof them being based on other metadata. I.e. it checks your library for songs with similar features as the song you gave to it as the seed. This does allow for some rather heterogenous playlists, depending on your choices.

You specified that a similar rating and the fact the a song is from a different album are rather important. In your screenshot I unfortunately I can't see your ratings.

But let's look at how 'Riverside' may be similar to your seed song by 'Nirvana' (assuming that was the only seed song).

    • the color seems to be a close match (+++)
    • it's from a different album (+++)
    • the rating is perhaps exactly the same (+++)
    • the BPM is slightly similar (+)
    • the genre is definitely not the same (---)
    • the amazon similarity is probably also not there (---)

So from the six rules you specified, riverside is a direct match for two rules with the weight 4 and a direct match for 1 rule with weight 3. It also is relatively close to another rule with weight 3. This apparently amounts to a match of a little over 60%.

I hope this helps, explaining why beaTunes chose the songs it chose.

    Thanks,

    -hendrik
